Overview
MCP Consultants delivered a bulk-earthworks extension to an operating overburden dump in Central Queensland, together with the mine-affected water dam and drainage system that supports it.
The requirement
Overburden dump capacity is not a problem that arrives gradually. It is forecast well ahead, and then it becomes urgent, because when a dump reaches capacity the material has nowhere to go and production is directly affected. The operation needed additional capacity brought online to schedule, with the water management infrastructure that a dump extension necessarily triggers.
Two scopes, in other words, that had to land together: the earthworks, and the mine-affected water containment and drainage serving them.
Earthworks alongside live operations
The extension was delivered around an operating mine. That constraint shapes the job more than the earthworks themselves do:
- Sequencing works so production haulage keeps running
- Managing interaction between construction plant and mining fleet
- Staging material movement to suit available access
- Maintaining safety controls where mining and construction share ground
Earthworks priced off a drawing without accounting for that sequencing is earthworks priced to be varied later. Planning it in from the start is what keeps the programme intact.
Mine-affected water
Mine-affected water is compliance-critical. Containment, drainage paths and capacity all have to land to specification, and the consequences of getting it wrong are regulatory rather than merely commercial.
Delivering the dam and drainage as one integrated package with the dump earthworks removed the interface risk that comes with splitting them across separate contracts. The drainage was designed and built around the extended dump as it took shape, rather than fitted to it afterwards.
The outcome
The extension gave the operation the dump capacity it needed, safely and to schedule, without disrupting production, with compliant mine-affected water containment and drainage delivered as part of the same package.
Outcome
Extended dump capacity and compliant mine-affected water containment, delivered safely alongside live mining operations.
