Overview

Overview

MCP Consultants delivers construction and infrastructure project management for Queensland’s mining sector, from front-end loading and study work through to construction delivery and handover.

We act as owner’s representative on client-side delivery, managing budget and scope end to end so projects arrive on time, on budget, and without compromise. Where operations need change designed, led and implemented, we bring the structure and site experience to make it stick.

Most project overruns on mine sites are not caused by the construction phase. They are set up much earlier, in scopes that were never properly defined, estimates built on optimistic assumptions, and approvals documentation that turns out to be incomplete once work is underway. Front-end work is where the cost and schedule risk actually lives, and it is where we prefer to be engaged.

Our principal combines 30+ years of hands-on heavy-equipment trade experience with postgraduate qualifications in engineering management and project management, so the plans we write are grounded in how work actually gets done on site rather than how it looks on a Gantt chart.

  • End-to-end budget and scope management
  • Front-end loading and study work
  • Estimating, scheduling and programme control
  • Contractor management and superintendence
  • Compliance and approvals documentation
  • Design, lead and implement change

How we deliver

From scope to handover

  1. 01

    Scope and planning

We work with your team to understand project goals, site conditions, constraints and resource needs before anything is committed to a programme.

  2. 02

    Planning and documentation

Estimates, schedules, approvals and compliance documentation are prepared so the project is genuinely build-ready rather than nominally approved.

  3. 03

    Mobilisation and delivery

From labour and logistics to contractor management, delivery is executed against the plan, with safety, time and budget tracked and reported throughout.

  4. 04

    Close-out and handover

Documentation, as-builts and lessons learned are handed over properly, so the asset is supportable long after we demobilise.

Where we work

Across the coalfields

We manage projects across the Bowen Basin coalfields and into the Galilee Basin, working out of Mackay. That takes in the operations around Moranbah, Dysart, Coppabella and Middlemount in the central basin, Blackwater, Emerald and Capella to the south, and Clermont and the Galilee to the west. Regional presence matters on a mine-site project: being close enough to walk the site during scoping is what stops surprises appearing during delivery.

Common questions

Before you enquire

Do you deliver projects, or manage contractors delivering them?

Both. We act as owner's representative on client-side delivery, managing contractors and protecting your scope, budget and programme. We also deliver small-to-medium civil and infrastructure scopes directly.

Can you get involved before a project is approved?

Yes, and it is usually where we add the most value. Front-end loading and study work, estimating and schedule development all happen before the funding decision, and the quality of that work largely determines whether the project lands on budget.

What size projects do you take on?

Small-to-medium civil and infrastructure work is our focus, including shutdown and project support scopes. That is a deliberate positioning, since these projects are often too small to attract a tier-one contractor's attention but too complex to run without dedicated management.

What qualifications sit behind the project management?

Our principal holds an MBA plus Masters degrees in Engineering Management and Project Management, along with risk-management credentials, on top of 30+ years in a heavy-equipment mechanical trade. The combination of postgraduate project qualifications and hands-on site background is unusual in this market.
