Overview
MCP Consultants designed and delivered a full-scale LV/MV workshop facility directly on site at Olive Downs, built to mine specification from concept through to handover.
The requirement
Light and medium vehicle maintenance is constant on an operating mine, and where it has to happen off site the cost is rarely just the repair. It is the travel, the machine sitting idle waiting for a slot, the coordination overhead of managing external providers, and the loss of control over when equipment comes back. For an operation running to a production schedule, that adds up quickly.
The requirement was to bring that capability on site: a workshop built to mine specification, sized and laid out for the fleet it would actually service, and delivered without disrupting the operation running around it.
Design and construct
MCP took the project end to end, from concept through to handover. That covered:
- Design of the facility to mine specification and site standards
- Scope definition, estimating and programme development
- Construction delivery and contractor management on site
- Compliance and approvals documentation
- Commissioning and handover
Delivering design and construct as a single package matters on a job like this. Where design sits with one party and construction with another, the interface between them is where cost and schedule risk collects, particularly when a design assumption meets a site condition that nobody checked.
Building on an operating site
The workshop was constructed on a live mine, which shapes almost every decision on the programme. Access, laydown, traffic interaction with production, and the safety controls governing where construction and mining share ground all had to be planned rather than resolved as they arose.
Work was delivered under documented safe systems of work, aligned to the site’s safety and health management system.
The outcome
The workshop supports day-to-day operations with faster maintenance turnaround times and improved maintenance logistics, and it reduces the operation’s reliance on external contractors. Maintenance capability now lives on site.
From one successful workshop build comes a scalable model: a facility type that can be replicated at other operations to save time, improve safety, and reduce reliance on external resources.
Outcome
Faster maintenance turnaround times, improved maintenance logistics, and reduced reliance on external contractors.
