Dump 5 Mine Affected Water Dam, Carmichael

MCP Consultants is providing client-side project management support to Bravus for the construction of the Dump 5 Mine Affected Water (MAW) Dam at Carmichael Coal Mine in Queensland’s Galilee Basin. The engagement began in March 2026 and is expected to run through to completion at the end of November 2026.

The requirement

Mine-affected water is compliance-critical. Containment, drainage paths and capacity all have to land to specification, and the consequences of getting it wrong are regulatory rather than merely commercial. On an operating mine, the works also have to be built around production, with a construction contractor, the mine’s own operations and a set of project interfaces that all need coordinating.

Bravus needed client-side oversight of the delivery: someone holding programme, quality, compliance and risk on the owner’s behalf while the contractor built the works.

MCP’s role

MCP provides delivery oversight of the major civil and earthworks packages that make up the dam:

• Northern and southern dam bunds
• Spillway
• MAW drainage and levee systems
• Western Clean Water Drain and Levee
• Bulk earthworks, material conditioning and compaction
• Rock protection and associated temporary works

Alongside the works themselves, the role covers coordination of the construction contractor, project interfaces and mine operations; programme and progress management; quality assurance and construction compliance; and risk management, supporting the safe and efficient delivery of the works in a remote operating mine environment.

Status

Works are in progress. Completion is expected at the end of November 2026, and this page will be updated when the dam is handed over.
